The States of Guernsey has taken delivery of two Alexander Dennis Enviro100EV battery-electric small buses as part of a multi-year framework contract with the manufacturer.

Stagecoach is operating the buses as part of its contract to deliver the island’s services. The Enviro100EV was selected after a trial of a similar vehicle and a procurement process in which Alexander Dennis scored highest for customer experience, island operation, and battery range and efficiency.

The newcomers are the first battery-electric buses for the island. Operation will give the States of Guernsey an opportunity to better understand their suitability to the local environment and infrastructure as part of a planned gradual fleet replacement.

Each example has 354kWh of energy storage. Power is taken via the Vehicle Electrical Drive System from Driventic. The buses seat 25 and can carry 45 passengers in total.

President of the States of Guernsey’s Committee for the Environment and Infrastructure, Deputy Adrian Gabriel, says: “Greenhouse gas emissions from road transport have gradually reduced over time, but on-island transport is still the largest contributor.

“Introducing two electric buses will not only enable us to reduce Guernsey’s emissions, but it will also reduce ongoing operating and maintenance costs.”

Alexander Dennis National Account Manager Shaun Millar has welcomed the choice of the Enviro100EV for Guernsey as the first battery-electric buses there.

“The size and manoeuvrability of the ‘big small bus’ make it idea for the island’s roads while offering passengers the comfort of a much larger vehicle,” he says.

“We look forward to supporting the ongoing operation with insights from our comprehensive AD Connect telematics to help maximise efficiency and lay the foundation for further electrification of Guernsey’s bus fleet.”
