No matter whose vehicles you use, research shows the most influential aspect on a passenger’s journey is the driver’s attitude. It can lead to five-star reviews, and reduce negatives, such as delays caused by congestion.

Customer service is the way to delight passengers, surveys show

Today, the industry stands at a crossroads, technologically and politically.

Coach operators who go abroad need to be prepared for the (hopefully unlikely) scenario of a ‘no-deal’ Brexit, while the impact on exchange rates of Brexit in whatever form, has the potential to ripple across the wider economy.

The bus industry suffers multiple challenges from congestion, to changes in travel patterns and the decline of the high street.

But it is possible to win through if you stick to a clear formula, of investment in staff and assets, with a clear determination of quality and safety.

Just over 15 years ago, Andy Cotton was entering the industry buying a small firm. Now, with excellent staff in which he invested heavily, the Stewarts Group heads on the next stage of its journey (see p16).

Also, 15 years ago this week routeone was about to be born. Since then a dedicated team has helped make it the industry’s number one. And, we’ve never been shy of tackling awkward subjects. Indeed the first issue carried a major story about the abuse of Section 19 permits.

After 15 years on routeone, it’s now time for my journey to take a new turn and I’m delighted to hand over to Tim Deakin, who’s been promoted to editor.

Routeone has been a joy to edit and I’ve been blessed with the most knowledgeable and enthusiastic readers I’ve had the pleasure to meet. You’ve been magnificent; I am humbled.
