Route Robin Rapid features updates for faster rail replacement deployment

Updated portable accessible information system combines a powered window mount with touchscreen route programming

Route Robin has updated its Rapid accessible information system following feedback from coach operators, with the company placing emphasis on quicker deployment and simpler route set up.

The product, one of four revealed as part of a competition staged between the Department for Transport (DfT) and Innovate UK to develop new solutions for the PSV (Accessible Information) Regulations (AIR), now features an industrial powered suction cup designed to secure the display to a vehicle window. The mounting system is derived from equipment used to handle glass panes safely, and monitors vacuum to maintain its hold automatically as the vehicle moves. The vacuum system is rated to 200kg, according to Director Elliott Brown.

A second update has altered the product’s route programming approach. Users can now programme routes directly through the Rapid’s touch screen, removing the requirement for a mobile device, for those customers who do not wish to take out a monthly connectivity package. A SIM-based option remains available for customers that want route information to be updated remotely, but Route Robin says the product can be operated without a subscription using journeys already loaded onto the unit or programmed locally.

The system comprises modular components with the Rapid version combining the display, controller, battery, and mounting system in one package. Mr Brown says the product can be configured in separate modules, including with vehicle power or with multiple displays.

The updates follow direct feedback from coach operators and coincide with DfT’s new funding scheme for transferable audio-visual equipment used on rail replacement coaches. The scheme reimburses qualifying AIR-compliant equipment, with funding capped at £2,000, excluding VAT.

Mr Brown says Route Robin is offering a grant reclaim guarantee for qualifying orders completed before the end of June.

“There are a lot of unknowns here as a business. For operators asking whether they want to buy equipment, they need to consider how much it is worth, and how much business they will get as a result. The sector needs some certainty which is why we have a guarantee. For orders made in June and claim paperwork completed before July, we will guarantee the grant. If the grant does not materialise as promised, the units can be returned for a full refund.”

Mr Brown says Route Robin is also supporting customers with claim packs and paperwork while urging them to verify that any selected system meets the AIR requirements.

“We are operator led,” Mr Brown adds. “The software works, has been led by operators, and will continue to be updated according to customer needs. Tell us what you want the product to do, and we will aim to please.”
