DVSA awards exemption for MoT tests due in June

Coaches and buses that are due for MoT testing in June have been awarded a three-month exemption by DVSA. It will be applied automatically.

DVSA suspended heavy vehicle testing from 21 March for three months. Vehicles due for MoT during that period were granted a three-month exemption. The subsequent exemption includes those in that category that are due for MoT test in June.

DVSA says it is “working to resume heavy vehicle testing” next month, but it has not given a date. It adds that it is talking to staff, Authorised Testing Facilities (ATFs), the industry and operators about how regular testing can be introduced in a safe manner. Further information will be provided in due course.

The Agency has advised operators to use the MoT history service to check the expiry dates of their vehicles’ tests.

The ATF Operators Association (ATFOA) has continued its earlier calls for the introduction of delegated testing. It would involve tests being carried out by suitably qualified ATF staff members.

ATFOA has now also raised the possibility of assisted testing. That would see the task delegated to an ATF staff member who is supervised by a DVSA tester. ATFOA believes that DVSA’s own resource “will not be enough to overcome the size of the backlog” when heavy vehicle testing resumes, it says.
