Mellor repositioning to become major player on UK bus scene
SHARE

Mellor is to embark on what it calls the next phase of growth that will see it become “a major player on the UK bus scene” through a focus on investment and expansion of its production capacity, and a “market repositioning” in 2022.

Further information on what that repositioning will entail will be announced in due course, but it will recognise the shifting emphasis towards zero-emission, the Rochdale manufacturer says.

Mellor will work closely with sister Woodall Nicholson subsidiary Promech Technologies to deliver on its plans. That collaboration will centre on the forthcoming development of a new, purpose-built R&D and production facility in Scarborough. It will act as a technology hub for the development of Mellor products and expand vehicle delivery capacity through the creation of a dedicated production division in the town.

Mellor says that the “even greater symbiosis” between it and Promech – which is led by former Woodall Nicholson Bus Division MD John Randerson – will enable the creation of new jobs in Scarborough.

Investing in people will be the third cornerstone of Mellor’s development work alongside technology and facilities improvements. Engagement will be undertaken with local schools and colleges in Scarborough to promote STEM learning among young people to help create a centre of excellence for future talent within the business. That will ensure the amount of UK-sourced technology in the Mellor range will increase.

Current Woodall Nicholson Bus Division MD Mark Clissett (pictured) – who joined earlier this year – says that the above points to “an exciting new phase in the development of the Mellor business.” He adds that many of the foundations for the repositioning of Mellor are already in place, and that planning for the new Promech facility at Scarborough is at an advanced stage.

“Technology, people and facilities will be front and centre of these developments. 2022 will see the emergence of Mellor as a major player on the UK bus scene, with ambitious plans to expand our overseas presence too.

“The demand for zero-emission vehicles continues to grow and we are 100% committed to delivering size- and cost-effective solutions that exceed operators’ requirements.”
