Pair of Morebus drivers Martin Broomfield and Kris Hillman have arrived in Bournemouth after completing their 115-mile cycle ride from Arsenal’s Emires Stadium in London to Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium.
The gruelling journey was made in aid of mental health charity Dorset Mind and the memory of Rob Douglas, who lost his life earlier this year.
The pair have raised more than £1300 through their efforts. Morebus owner Go-Ahead says it will add an extra £300 to the total as part of a commitment to raise money for local charities.
“We wanted to do all we could in his memory to help others who are suffering,” comments Martin. “Rob was a lifelong Arsenal supporter – hence our choice of route. It was 115 miles – the furthest either of us has ridden – and we can definitely feel it now. The weather was awful too – but it was all worth it if we can raise enough money to help this worthwhile local charity.”
Adds Kris: “We all feel Rob’s loss terribly, and we wanted to do something positive in his memory. All money raised will be used by Dorset Mind to help those who so desperately need the wonderful support the charity provides to people living in our community.”
The charity educates people on and challenges stigma around mental health and inequality. It provides one-to-one and group support including counselling, mentoring, support groups, active monitoring and a befriending service which help people regain social skills and develop confidence. The charity also delivers educational well being programmes for schools and workplaces and provides volunteering opportunities.
