FlixBus has announced Alex Strawbridge from partner operator Cymru Coaches as its driver of the year for 2024.
Mr Strawbridge (pictured above), who is originally from Swansea, is the first Welshman to win the award.
He joined the Gowerton-based operator last year as a FlixBus driver on the Bristol Airport-Swansea route.
He received the highest rating of all drivers on FlixBus’s passenger reviews, with customers praising his “kind manner, clear announcements, and commitment to ensuring a smooth, safe journey”.
“I didn’t expect anything because I see providing a great customer experience as part of my job getting people from A to B,” says Mr Strawbridge. “But it’s a massive honour, and I really appreciate the recognition from FlixBus.”
FlixBus Senior Operations Manager Francesca Hand, says: “Drivers like Alex are often the reason passengers return to FlixBus, so we couldn’t be more delighted to present him with Driver of the Year.
“So many customers commented on how approachable and professional he was, with a focus on safety and punctuality.”
The award winner encouraged more to consider a career switch to coach driving as FlixBus plans further expansion this summer and he added what he thought passengers wanted from a driver.
“For me, consistent communication is key,” he says. “You need to be informative, have patience, and greet passengers with a smile. Whether I’m taking people to the airport for a well-deserved holiday or getting them home after a long day, it’s so important to create a relaxed environment.”
Meanwhile, receiving the “highly commended” distinction was Darren Keenan, who works for Ashcrofts Mini Travel in Golborne, Warrington.
Mr Keenan (pictured below) began on FlixBus operations shortly after the partnership with Ashcrofts began in August 2024 and has since amassed impressive customer ratings, according to the travel tech brand.
The 55-year-old, who has been driving long-distance express coaches for around four years, says: “Well, this is a real honour! I had been wanting to drive for FlixBus for a while, and when I saw a job advertised with Ashcroft, I seized the opportunity.
“You need the right mindset to drive long distances but I am delighted to have made the move to coaches – it is very different from being in the armed forces and prison services – but I really enjoy it.”
