Stagecoach begins bus operations on Guernsey

Stagecoach has taken over the running of bus operations on Guernsey as of 1 April.

The operator won an initial five-year contract last September following a procurement exercise and has thus replaced Tower Transit.

Bus livery will remain unchanged and the buses.gg brand will also stay in use.

Staff from the previous operator were offered the same roles in the new operation, which forms part of Stagecoach’s South West division.

The Stagecoach bus fleet on Guernsey will comprise 42 vehicles and the staff of 71 includes 53 drivers.

The new contract-holder says it has spent the last six months gaining insight into operations, the island and building relationships with key stakeholders.

It adds that passengers can expect a smooth handover with no disruption to the existing services or timetables.

Peter Knight, Managing Director at Stagecoach South West, says: “We’re looking forward to continuing to build relationships with our new customers and stakeholders in Guernsey; providing  safe and reliable travel; that islanders can depend upon to keep them connected to the people and places they need to get.

“The six-month mobilisation period has been invaluable in understanding the unique operating environment and helps us ensure that we can provide a bus service that Islanders can both be proud of and rely upon.”

Meanwhile, a new buses.gg app and website has been launched by UrbanThings.

Available on iOS and Android, the app offers real-time journey planning and key travel information.

Nicole Easden, Business Development and Account Manager at UrbanThings, says: “Technology has the power to transport public transport, making it more efficient and accessible. We’re proud to have worked with the States of Guernsey and Stagecoach South West to deliver a modern, user-friendly solution that puts real-time information in the hands of passengers.”

Laura Oxburgh, States of Guernsey Head of On-Island Travel and Transport Implementation,  adds: “With public transport playing a vital role in Guernsey, it’s important that passengers have reliable, up-to-date information.

“The new app and website will make it easier to plan journeys and stay informed about bus services.”
