Portsmouth City Council is to install up to 307 bus information screens at bus stop, thanks to Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) funding.
The technology, which will cover up to 95% of bus stops in the city, includes a push button which will give audio information for those with visual impairments.
The installations, supplied by Vix Technology, are in response to survey results which indicated bus users in the area wanted more real-time information.
Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Portsmouth’s Cabinet Member for Transport, says: “We often hear requests for clearer information at bus stops, and I’m excited to share that we’re installing screens throughout the city to provide passengers with the details they need for a hassle-free journey. Our aim is to make bus travel accessible and straightforward for everyone.”
Two types of screens will be installed – one for bus shelters and the other for poles without shelters.
They will show an estimated time of arrival and a countdown, using GPS data from the buses, plus weather and news updates.
Daniel Jacklin, Business Development Manager at Vix Technology, says: “We’re excited about the upcoming partnership with Portsmouth City Council, as we expand our real-time information displays to over 300 more bus stops in the city.
“This expansion, made possible through the BSIP funding, marks a significant milestone in our longstanding collaboration with Portsmouth. Looking forward to enhancing commuter experience and facilitating smoother journeys for all!”
It follows the introduction in February of new ticketing offers including 90 minutes’ bus travel for £3, which was also part of the BSIP fruits.
