Double-deck and full-size single-deck see double-digit gains over YTD 2016; midis remain static
Despite a testing time politically for the industry, registrations of new buses in Great Britain rose by 8.9% during the first six months of 2017 compared to the same period in 2016, according to figures presented recently by Alexander Dennis (ADL).
The key double-deck market showed a rise of 14%, from 678 to 766 units, with deliveries to London continuing to drive the sector.
No fewer than 294 Volvo B5LH hybrids were registered between January and June, with 187 ADL Enviro400s and 70 hybrid Enviro400H hitting the road; 94 Wrightbus New Routemasters entered service, with smaller number of double-deckers from Ayats, BCI, Optare and Scania registered.
The full-size single-deck market grew by 61% – albeit from just 23 to 37 units – and it continues to be dominated by the Volvo B8RLE, with Mercedes-Benz, Optare, Scania and Yutong products making up the remainder.
In the midi market, which also encompasses lightweight, full-length single-deckers, there was a reduction of three units, from 412 to 409 in the first six months of 2017. ADL’s Enviro200 dominated this sector, accounting for 318 registrations – 78% of the total. Optare and Wrightbus accounted for the remainder.
Of the 1,212 total registrations, ADL accounted for 575 (47%), making it clear market leader. Volvo comes in second, with 359 (30%) and Wrightbus is in third place, with 180. Scania and Optare complete the top five, with 41 and 31 registrations respectively, according to the figures.
