Arriva will launch what it says is “a low-cost alternative to rail travel” between Harlow and Stansted Airport on 22 February with new route 723.
The service will reduce existing bus journey times by what the operator says is up to 40 minutes, with a typical trip on the 723 taking around half an hour. That compares to around 22 minutes by car and 17 minutes by train, although the operator notes how the bus at £3 will cost significantly less than the Stansted Express rail fare.
It adds that the service is intended primarily for airport workers but will also deliver a convenient option for airline passengers. The 723 will improve access to Stansted from parts of Harlow that currently lack a direct bus link.
A timetable published by Arriva shows a first airport-bound journey at 0320hrs seven days per week. Service is broadly hourly Monday to Saturday and two-hourly on Sundays, with a final return from Stansted at 0020hrs each day.
Speaking about the 723 development, Arriva South Head of Commercial Michael Jennings says: “For airport workers in particular, reliability, journey time and cost really matter, and the 723 delivers on all three.
“By offering a fast, direct and affordable connection from Harlow, we are making it easier for people to choose the bus for everyday commuting as well as flights, helping to reduce congestion and support travel choices that are better for the environment.”
Stansted claims to be the UK’s number one airport for public transport use, with almost 50% of passengers travelling by coach, bus and train, says Surface Access Manager Steve Mills.
“The new 723 service will be a great addition to the airport’s extensive local bus network, providing staff and local residents with a high-quality, fast and cost-effective direct service between Harlow and London Stansted,” he continues.
“We have worked in partnership with Arriva for a number of years to develop transport options that benefit the local community and provide convenient access to the airport.”
