Arriva Yorkshire has started a month’s trial of the Scania/ADL Enviro400 double-decker biogas bus on route 163/166 serving Castleford and Leeds.

Arriva Yorkshire says it is looking at potential solutions for the Leeds Clean Air Zone (CAZ), due to come in by 2020.

Arriva Yorkshire Area MD Jon Croxford says: “We are delighted to have partnered with Scania to showcase what is set to be the future of bus travel.

“Trialling new low-emission technologies helps us in moving towards reaching our ambitious group wide target of reducing our CO2 emissions by 30% by 2020 as part of our Destination Green programme.”

Not only are the buses eco-friendly they are also equipped with:

– Free Wi-Fi

– USB charging points

– Glass staircase for a brighter interior

– High quality seats for a more comfortable journey

– Quieter engines for a smoother ride

– Next stop audio announcements

Scania has a long history of producing gas-powered vehicles for European markets but developing a product to supply to bus operators in the UK has been a greater challenge, as Mark Oliver, Scania's UK Bus & Coach Fleet Sales General Manager, explains:.

“Unlike mainland Europe, British bus networks use a high proportion of double deck buses. Across Europe single deck buses with gas tanks on the roof are a common sight, but for the UK we have had to accommodate the tanks within the double deck bodywork itself.”
