Coaching falls into leisure sector: LGA

The Local Government Association (LGA) has asked local authorities (LAs) to include premises used for coaching activities in their application of business rates relief to the hospitality and leisure sector.

While it is not mandatory for LAs to adopt that position, when it is taken up it will mean that the business rates relief will apply to those premises in the 2020/21 financial year. There is no rateable value limit on the relief, government guidance says.

“Working with the Tourism Alliance, we have identified some tourism businesses that are not explicitly mentioned in the guidance, but which in our view do fall into the intended category,” says the LGA.

The Scottish Government had earlier given an assurance that coaching premises and operators’ depots and offices will be classified as leisure sector premises.
