DVSA Vehicle Standards Assessors carrying out a door safety test on PSVs at annual test will do so from 5 January 2026 by using a new tool approved by the Agency, operators have been advised.
The new device appears to be a large cylinder with a handle. It will be placed into the doorway as the door closes instead of conducting the safety test with a hand or shoulder.
DVSA has told operators to expect to see the piece of equipment in action from the start of next year and notes how it will allow examiners to carry out the task as needed at annual test while keeping their hands clear of closing doors.
Where vehicles require a door safety system, assessors are told by the PSV Inspection Manual to apply resistance to the door edge in its operational cycle. The safety system must cause the door to stop or stop and reopen when resistance is applied, a requirement that will not change with adoption of the new tool.
In introducing it, DVSA says that the item has been developed following feedback from assessors and trade unions. It is preferred by 87% of assessors in nationwide trials, the agency adds.
In addition to improving safety for staff, the device is also set to give a “more consistent approach at all test sites.” The Agency notes how its introduction “reflects DVSA’s commitment to protecting staff and delivering consistent national testing.”
Operators are advised to brief teams involved with presentation of vehicles for annual test on introduction of the new tool.
