I have asked the same questions as Alan Phillips [routeone/Opinion/5 September] for years now about roadworks
Surely when the tender is put out for the work, the price alone should not dictate who gets the job – the time taken to complete the work should be factored in and have a heavy influence on who gets the work.
I suspect someone will reply by saying that such-and-such contractors get all of this work i.e. they won the contract for the next five years etc.
In which case, they should be on a daily penalty for each day that the work takes therefore making them put sufficient manpower in and work efficiently enough to complete the work as soon as possible.
