Market Drayton is another destination to be accredited by the Coach Friendly scheme operated by the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT), with the ceremony marking that success being held on 26 May at the Shropshire town’s bus station.

Gaining Coach Friendly status recognises the commitment of Market Drayton to welcoming coaches and their passengers and drivers. Shropshire Council notes a hope that it will help to encourage more tours and trips to the town, increasing footfall, supporting businesses, and providing a boost to the local economy.

CPT requires various positive considerations around coach traffic for a destination to be accredited under the scheme.

Those include adequate, free drop-off and pick-up points and free or reasonably-priced coach parking, with safe access to facilities and attractions along with clear signage to those areas. Driver facilities are also a consideration, along with a named representative of the local authority who can deal with difficulties, conflicts, and complaints.

A Shropshire Council webpage notes that free coach parking is provided in Market Drayton bus station, with a stand there for use to set down and pick up passengers. Additional coach spaces are available at Newport Road car park.

Speaking about the award, Shropshire Council Cabinet Member for Transport and Regeneration Cllr Rob Wilson says: “Gaining CPT Coach Friendly accreditation is a fantastic achievement for Market Drayton.

“Becoming accredited as Coach Friendly will help to increase visitor numbers to the town generally and, in particular, to the Wednesday street market and indoor market.

“The hope is that coach companies will call via Market Drayton on a Wednesday morning en route to other destinations such as Hodnet Hall Gardens, Bridgemere Garden Centre and the Dorothy Clive Garden. We are also hoping to collaborate with Fordhall Farm to create a bespoke offer for coach groups and visitors.”

Cllr Wilson adds that the work to gain Coach Friendly status is part of the wider aims of Shropshire Council’s new destination management plan for the county.

Present at the event marking the accreditation were Mayor of Market Drayton Tim Manton (pictured, second from right) and Deputy Mayor Phil Glover (second from left). CPT Coach Manager Andy Shaw (pictured, centre) handed over the certificate.
