Mellor is projecting a turnover of over £85 million and an output of 900 vehicles in 2023 as part of what the Rochdale business calls “an accelerating path of expansion.”
Such growth has come via a mix of strengthened minibus production capabilities and work in the battery-electric bus market for stage carriage and local authority use in the Sigma. It runs from 7-12m and includes two accessible high-floor models.
Headcount at Mellor has grown by 40% since 2019, the manufacturer says. While expansion has come already, Mellor expects to continue on that trajectory.
It adds: “These plans encompass exploring new markets while tailoring the product range to cater to diverse needs. The company is committed to delivering bespoke solutions that address the unique requirements of different countries, reflecting adaptability and customer focus. Continuous development of electric vehicles, in tandem with emerging technologies, ensures Mellor’s leadership in innovation.”
As part of that, Mellor says advancements in battery chemistry are expected to reduce vehicle weight. £15 million has already been invested into product development.
In addition to a presence in the DACH countries of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and also in Sweden, Mellor plan to grow into further European nations. An ongoing demonstration programme will include Barcelona, it notes.
Although Mellor has moved strongly into battery-electric power, it says that its Euro VI diesel range displays “continued relevance” in the UK market. That was shown recently with First Manchester in partnership when Transport for Greater Manchester ordered 17 Strata Plus minibuses for use on Bee Network services in Rochdale from 2024.
Speaking about projected record revenue and strong vehicle numbers, Gustavo Marqueta, Group Business Development Director of Mellor parent WN VTech, says that “engineering excellence agility and the ability to continuously improve based on customer feedback have paved the way for our remarkable growth.
“This transformation allowed us to explore new markets and pioneer sustainable solutions, showcased by Mellor’s resilience during the pandemic, notably with the Sigma range,” continues Mr Marqueta.
“Our integration within the broader WN VTech group reflects a shared focus on engineering prowess and attracts synergies in a myriad of supply chain and manufacturing areas. Mellor’s investment shift, particularly since the introduction of the Sigma range in 2020, underlines our dedication to driving positive societal change and propelling sustainable vehicle technology into the future.”
