Skills Motor Coaches has completed acquisition of what it says are key assets of the REL Redwing operation in London from REL Capital. A new company called Redwing Coaches of London has been formed to capture that purchase. It will operate as part of the Skills Group using the established Redwing identity.
The deal follows a decision by REL Capital founder Andy Scott to exit the coach market. Mr Scott says he is pleased to have saved the Redwing brand from closure and “steadied the ship over the last three years.”
Nottingham-based Skills Motor Coaches was founded in 1919 and remains in the ownership of the Skill family. It says that a strong period of growth has been seen since the pandemic period, “underpinned by continued investment in… people, fleet and infrastructure.”
Establishment of the London operation under the Redwing brand “represents a strategic step for the group,” Skills adds. Extending its reach into the London and South East England market strengthens the business’s position as one of the UK’s foremost coach operators and safeguards “one of the industry’s most respected brands” in Redwing.
“It highlights the group’s commitment to responsible growth and its confidence in the continued demand for quality, reliable coach travel,” Skills says in a statement.
Managing Director Pete Hallam adds that the Redwing name “has long been recognised for its quality and reliability in the London market.” He describes Redwing as having a proud heritage and a loyal following that aligns with Skills’ values and long-term growth strategy.
“We look forward to investing in its future and ensuring the Redwing name continues to stand for quality and reliability in the years ahead,” continues Mr Hallam. “This is an exciting opportunity for the group. Redwing has an outstanding legacy, and we are committed to building on that with the strength and resources of the Skills Group.”
While part of a new operation, the Redwing name will be retained along with what the buyer says is a focus on continuity for customers, staff and partners. Skills says it will build the Redwing proposition via investment in vehicles, technology and operations support, “ensuring that the brand remains synonymous the quality and professionalism.”
