Traffic Commissioner for Wales Nick Jones is to retire in October. Recruitment of his successor has begun, and the required skills include the ability to hold Public Inquiries and produce written reports in Welsh.
Mr Jones has previously supported the suggestion that his successor is bilingual. In a submission to the Commission on Justice in Wales dated 11 May 2018, he wrote that it would be an “essential criterion” for the next post-holder.
“I have referred to the considerable disadvantages in my not speaking Welsh. Those in parts of Wales that are primarily Welsh speaking as a first language have been at a disadvantage.
“I am aware that there is a strong body of opinion within Wales that my successor as TC for Wales should be fluent in both English and Welsh.”
The post is based in either Caernarfon or Cardiff. The salary is £99,301.
