States of Jersey Ambulance Service takes two examples for non-emergency ambulance work; highly-specialised order demonstrates strong potential for customisation, says the Brighouse manufacturer
Treka has delivered two customised Mercedes-Benz Sprinter-based coachbuilt minibuses to the States of Jersey Ambulance Service for use as non-emergency patient transport, demonstrating the potential for alternative uses of its base vehicles, says MD Morgan Clissett.
They are heavily customised and the specification includes strict infection control measures.
That mandates storage boxes finished in powder-coated aluminium rather than the normal fabric, wipe-clean headliner, vinyl-covered seats (including the driver’s), and fitment of a glove dispenser. A bariatric stretcher lift was also required.
“When we engaged with the States of Jersey, one thing became clear among its needs: Infection control,” says Morgan. “That presented an opportunity to apply some new thinking to ensure that the two vehicles meet the rigorous standards involved with moving patients.”
The adapted minibuses also have the potential to be used as front-line ambulances in an emergency situation. They come with four Phoenix passenger seats, a CCTV system and front and rear parking sensors.
“This deal represents one of our smallest contracts, but we supplied exactly what the customer required,” he adds. Treka has delivered training to staff on Jersey to ensure that the adapted minibuses work at their most efficient.
“The design challenge was one that we relished. It illustrates the fact that our minibuses are eminently suitable for use in other applications where we can adapt them to the customer’s needs.
“Our policy is not to think outside the box. Instead, it’s to think about what more we can do inside it.”
