I have been a coach and bus driver for over 20 years and with C9 Recruitment for around a year. I have worked across many of its clients, with good feedback received from those operators.
I was asked to share some of my professional life as a coach and bus driver. It is an interesting world, full of unique challenges and rewards. I am grateful to C9 Recruitment for the opportunity. It has been great at understanding what drivers need and matching us with the right work. It is nice to have someone in your corner in this industry.
So, what are things like for a coach or bus driver on the road?
Money is important, sure, but there is more to being a driver than pay. In the coach industry, it is a lot about the quality of the job. You are carrying tourists, seeing new places – that is enjoyable.
The company covers meals and hotels on tours, which is a nice touch. It makes you feel valued and more than just a number, which can happen in the bus industry. Yes, the days can be long, especially on tour, but there is a sense of flexibility that is quite liberating.
Understanding from employers can vary. In the bus industry, you sometimes feel like just another employee. A bit more recognition would be nice. On the coach side, though, operators treat you more like family. It is a whole different atmosphere.
Schedules can be tough, especially in buses. Tight timings can make the job stressful. In coaching, things are more relaxed. You have your route and there is less rush, which really helps with job satisfaction.
Talking about vehicles, most coaches are a dream to drive. They come with all the comforts – DVD player, toilet, comfy seats. It makes a long drive much easier. Buses can be hit and miss, but when they are good, they are really good.
What is the main complaint among coach and bus drivers? It is usually about wages. We all think those could be a bit better, but that is just one part of the job. Besides pay, the hours can get to you. Long shifts, especially in peak traffic, can be very tiring.
And sometimes, you just wish for more respect from the public, and better support from those at the top. It is not just about the rate of pay; it is about feeling like your hard work is seen and appreciated. Little things like a ‘thank you’ from a passenger, or a ‘good job’ from a manager, can make a big difference in how we feel about our work.
If I could change one thing about being a driver, it would be the traffic. That and making sure all employers are as considerate as those in the coach sector.
Being a coach or bus driver is more than just driving. It is about dealing with people, managing schedules, and making sure everything runs smoothly. Sure, there are ups and downs. But at the end of the day, it is about getting people to where they need to be safely. That is what we aim for.
I hope the above gives you a window into our world. It is not always easy, but it is rewarding in its own way, especially when you have the right support – like I have had with C9 Recruitment. That really makes a difference.
