Berlin public transport provider Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) has converted options for 198 Alexander Dennis (ADL) Enviro500 tri-axle double-deckers into firm orders.
They will follow the first two Enviro500s that were delivered to the German capital in 2020. The buses will be built in the UK, with the Plaxton site at Scarborough “to lead final assembly,” says ADL. Delivery will be complete by the end of 2022.
BVG and ADL signed a multi-year framework contract in 2018. The first two Enviro500 buses delivered to Berlin have successfully completed a testing programme and options for a further 230 buses remain in the contract.
The buses for Berlin are 13.8m long and 4.06m tall. They have three doors and two staircases and can carry up to 112 passengers. ADL will support them from its recently opened Berlin office, service workshop and parts warehouse. That investment will underpin further expansion in Europe, the manufacturer says.
President and Managing Director Paul Davies adds that the successful completion of the testing programme by the first two buses and the award of a contract for 198 further examples “are yet another ringing endorsement of our global double-deck expertise and customer focus.”
