Steph Baker, longstanding Regional Sales Manager of Switch Mobility and its predecessor Optare, died on 27 March.
Ms Baker was well-known for her passion for and commitment to the two brands and she had remained one of the few women involved in bus sales. She was often credited with making a large contribution to the Optare marque’s success among many smaller bus operators, in particular via its Solo platform.
Ms Baker’s career with Optare and Switch spanned more than 20 years from its start in 2003. “Her unwavering dedication made her a highly respected figure among bus operators throughout the UK,” a Switch spokesperson says, adding that Ms Baker’s death “has left a profound void in our organisation and the wider bus industry community in the UK.”
The manufacturer has extended its condolences to Ms Baker’s family and friends and says it is committed to honouring her memory and continuing her legacy.
Adds Commercial Manager Patrick Brennan: “Steph was a pioneer in her chosen career. She was a woman in a gritty industry, but despite her challenges she gained admiration and affection from all those she worked with for her drive, knowledge, professionalism, friendship and care for both her colleagues and customers.
“She mingled with everyone from bus mechanics, drivers and factory workers to company Directors, politicians, and bus company owners. Steph was always focused and eager to learn new skills, and had a real passion for what she did – which resulted in hundreds of bus sales.
“We will forever be in her debt.”
