A driver for Trentbarton, Steve Jolly (pictured), has gathered £875 worth of food for four food banks across Nottinghamshire.
After noticing more people in the region resorting to food banks, Steve used his contacts as union representative for Unite the Union to contact Trentbarton’s depots for help.
Donations started to pour in before Christmas from across the group, the union and Steve’s fellow Sutton-in-Ashfield drivers.
“I was still working and considered myself so lucky compared to all those who were struggling. More and more people were using food banks and I thought we could make a bit of a difference by helping some families in these unprecedented times,” Steve says. “We have had an absolutely fabulous response. It left me speechless.”
The donations will be delivered to food banks this week, including St Peter’s in Mansfield and Mary’s Food Bank at St Mary Magdalene in Sutton-in-Ashfield.
Lee Fletcher, chairman at Mary’s Food Bank, said: “On behalf of myself and all the volunteers at Mary’s Food Bank we want to say a big thank you for helping the people of Sutton in these hard times.
“I would like to thank the Trentbarton staff for collecting donations. We welcome them with open arms. Since the start of the pandemic the use of the food bank has increased every week. We are feeding up to 60 people a week.”
