The Department for Transport has revealed details of penalties that will be applied for failure to observe the requirement after Brexit to register all trailers with a GVW of over 750kg that are used commercially in foreign countries that have ratified the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.
DVSA will undertake enforcement, but the agency will manage that regime “to ensure that only trailers used on relevant international journeys” are subjected to it.
Non-compliance will generate a fixed penalty of £100 for offences that include failing to produce a trailer registration document when required to do so, using a trailer than has not been registered in a country where it is required, and failing to affix a registration plate to a trailer.
In countries subject to trailer registration requirements, the DfT says that enforcement action may extend to refusal of access, impounding and the issuing of fine to users of unregistered trailers.
It adds that those fines may be as high as €1000, and that payment may be required at the roadside prior to the trailer being released.
