WheelRight: Monitoring tyre pressures helps to reduce costs significantly

Tyre pressure management specialist WheelRight is calling for the government’s ‘road revolution’ to incorporate a robust approach to tyre pressure monitoring, saying that its products have demonstrated that there is an appetite from operators for more streamlined oversight.

“During a trial of our drive-over tyre pressure monitoring service in conjunction with Highways England at Keele services on the M6 southbound, we measured more than 50,000 tyre pressures for commercial vehicles,” says WheelRight MD John Catling.

“Of the drivers that we spoke to, 65% said that they had experienced some form of tyre-related issue while on the road. Interestingly, over 90% of them said that they would use the WheelRight system at least once a month to supplement their walk-round checks.”

He adds that a more robust attitude towards monitoring tyre pressures would benefit congestion by removing a common source of breakdowns. Additionally, when blowouts occur, they often damage other parts of the vehicle and are expensive to deal with.

“One of the main causes of congestion is poor tyre maintenance. Failing to look after tyres can lead to under-inflation and blowouts.”
