Minibus-based demand responsive transport is coming to Oxford with the launch of PickMeUp, an app-based platform that will be operated by a fleet of six Mercedes-Benz Sprinters.
Run by Oxford Bus Company (OBC), the pilot launches on 25 June. It utilises technology developed by Via, which operates ride-sharing services in North America, and it will initially serve the eastern side of the city (pictured).
The trial is being undertaken on behalf of OBC’s parent, the Go-Ahead Group. PickMeUp users will summon a minibus via app and the service is designed to be cheaper than a taxi and more flexible than a conventional bus. It will operate between 0630-2230hrs Monday to Friday, and between 0900-2000hrs at weekends.
The average response time is expected to be 10 minutes and an introductory fare of £2.50 will be charged; if the journey could be made via an existing bus route, a surcharge of £2.50 will be levied.
Says OBC Managing Director Phil Southall: “For some time now, connectivity has been a challenge for routes across the east of Oxford, and we believe that our new service will help where traditional bus services do not work commercially. There is a high concentration of employment within the eastern arc and as that grows, it will lead to greater congestion. PickMeUp is ideal for businesses and we have various packages available for companies.”
The 17-seat Sprinters have Wi-Fi, USB charging, wheelchair access and high-backed seats.
