Centrad has launched a passenger counting camera designed specifically for the coach and bus market that the telematics and CCTV specialist has christened CenCount.

It will provide operators with real-time data, enabling them to accurately track and monitor passenger flow and make informed decisions to optimise route planning and scheduling and improve service reliability.

The product can also effectively identify fare evasion by cross-referencing traveller counts with ticket sales. CenCount has already been adopted by Surrey operator United Minibuses and Coaches, which after positive early results is exploring opportunities to expand the system across more of its high-demand routes.

CenCount uses advanced deep-learning algorithms to deliver what Centrad says is “highly accurate boarding and alighting data” at rate of up to 98%.

Its 1080p resolution and 30 frames per second high-definition imaging ensure precise capture even in fast-moving environments, while wide dynamic range technology enables reliable performance in varied lighting conditions.

CenCount supports RS485, I/O and USB connectivity, making integration with existing fleet systems straightforward and flexible, the supplier adds.

It notes how the new platform can be deployed on the upper deck of a double-deck vehicle to track live passenger distribution in both saloons, giving operators the option to monitor real-time occupancy while improving safety oversight and optimising allocations based on in-service usage patterns.

Maximum seating capacities can be pre-configured into the system to enable dynamic on-screen updates such as ‘no seats available’ or ‘limited seats available’ depending on live availability to ensure that upper deck crowding levels are always visible without drivers or passengers needing to check.

Speaking about CenCount, Centrad Managing Director Geoff Cross says: “We are delighted to bring to market an innovative solution that provides coach and bus operators with real-time insights into passenger numbers, enabling them to optimise route planning and make informed decisions about how best to deploy their fleet on a day-to-day basis.

“Beyond optimising fleet utilisation, CenCount also delivers a host of additional benefits that have a real impact on improving service levels, such as helping to identify fare discrepancies, improving resource allocation for staffing and budget, and preventing overcrowding – which will all contribute to an improved passenger experience.”
