The UK Coach Operators Association (UKCOA) has appointed longstanding industry legal figure Ian Jones as Business Development and Marketing Consultant. His involvement will strengthen the trade body’s capability to assist and represent coach operators, it says.
Mr Jones brings an established and personal connection to the industry thanks to a career that has included extensive work representing coach operators during his many years with transport legal specialist Backhouse Jones until leaving in 2025. That gives him first-hand experience of regulatory, commercial and operational pressures on coaching, UKCOA adds.
He will work closely with the Association to support member engagement, advocate for the interests of coach operators, and help to raise awareness of the sector’s value within the wider transport and tourism landscape.
Mr Jones notes how coaches “are the corridors between normal life and important life” in their capacity of carrying passengers to events, celebrations, and other occasions that are memorable.
“That sense of shared experience, of the ‘in between’ being part of life itself, has stayed with me throughout my career, and I am delighted to be working with UKCOA,” he adds, noting how travelling across the United States by Greyhound coach as a student shaped his perspective on transport and his professional outlook.
“Being alone on the Greyhound made me observant and reinforced my ability to talk to anybody. These attributes were to be invaluable to my legal career, and I hope to put them to good use encouraging coach operators to join UKCOA.”
UKCOA President Stephen Telling has welcomed Mr Jones to the trade body, noting: “Ian brings a rare combination of legal expertise, sector knowledge and genuine passion for coach travel.
“His understanding of both the operational realities and the human side of the industry makes him a valuable addition to the UKCOA team.” The Association now counts over 150 members, representing operators that provide all types of coach travel.
Mr Jones will more fully outline his advocacy of UKCOA membership in the February print issue of routeone.
