A team of staff from Arriva’s Selby depot will walk 14.2 miles on 7 June in aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance, inspired by seeing a rescue close to their station.
Around 30 colleagues are set to take on the trek from Selby bus station to York Piccadilly, with many more team members to support them with encouragement and refreshment en route.
The idea came earlier this year when Yorkshire Air Ambulance was called to an incident near the depot, the helicopter landing in the park behind the bus station.
During a conversation with the pilot, staff had their eyes opened regarding the nature of the operation.
Chloe Harrison, health and wellbeing champion at Selby depot, says: “They didn’t realise the air ambulance runs entirely off donations.
“It costs £20,000 a day to operate. That really made people think.”
Yorkshire Air Ambulance is one of few such services to operate right throughout the night, as well as the day. Its helicopters are also equipped with night vision technology.
Ms Harrison adds: “It’s brought the team together in a really positive way and it actually surprised me how many people got behind it. What a good team we have.
“You never know when you or a loved one might need the air ambulance.”
Arriva’s passengers have also been donating to the cause, with some appearing in person at the depot to contribute.
