Blackpool Transport surprised Kath with flowers for her bravery

A Blackpool Transport bus driver has been commended for helping to save the life of a pedestrian having a seizure at the roadside.

Kath Smith was driving the number 3 service at 1030hrs and spotted a pedestrian lying face down on the footpath in an ankle-deep puddle, who appeared to be having a fit. Kath pulled over, alerted her customers, and asked them to remain on the bus.

She realised the pedestrian was having some form of seizure, and got on her knees to move them into the recovery position.

Police commented that without her quick thinking and bravery, the pedestrian could have drowned in the deep puddle.

Sally Shaw, Director of People & Stakeholders at Blackpool Transport, says: “We’re extremely proud of Kath’s bravery and quick decision-making in what was a very difficult situation.

“Not only was she able to help the person in to the recovery position, but she did so in a professional and courteous manner to her onboard passengers too.”

Blackpool Transport has commended Kath, and surprised her with a bouquet of flowers and personal thanks from the company.
