Wrightbus has placed an order with Ballard for a further 50 hydrogen fuel cell modules. It follows a previous order for 50 that was shipped in 2020.

Ballard says the second order will be used to power buses to be built for cities including Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham and London. Aberdeen City Council was recently awarded £4.5m from the Energy Transition Fund for a further 10 hydrogen fuel cell-electric double-deckers, while orders are in hand with Wrightbus for such vehicles for use in Belfast and Birmingham. Of the additional 50 modules, four were shipped in 2020.

Says Ballard Chief Commercial Officer Rob Campbell: “The orders announced from Wrightbus for 50 fuel cell modules, in combination with the 50 modules noted in 2020, underpins the value we place on our longstanding partnership with Wrightbus.

“The fuel cell-electric bus market is now gaining momentum and it is expected to continue on an aggressive growth path in Europe and globally.

“Ballard intends to continue leading with proven and reliable fuel cell products that offer superior total cost of ownership for bus operators, along with the benefits of fuel cell buses that deliver route flexibility, rapid refuelling and long range zero-emission performance.”
