First Bus has introduced the 10th and final battery-electric bus to routes connecting the University of York, the centre of York and the city’s train station.

The StreetDeck Electroliner double-deckers are operating on the 66 and 67 services and shuttles between the campuses.

They are housed at First’s James Street depot, which will become one of the first fully electric depots outside London when work is completed, due in March.

The buses are part of an order of 53 from Wrightbus, which also includes GB Kite Electroliner single-deckers and which began to arrive last August. They are funded by a £13 million investment by First Bus and £10.2 million awarded to City of York Council via the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas scheme.

Tom Donnelly, Operations Manager of First Bus in York, says: “This rollout of electric buses on the University services continues our green transport revolution across York. It is creating cleaner air and quieter streets around the campus and along routes to the train station.”

He adds: “These buses are enhancing the journey experience for our customers with more comfort and on-board technology including wi-fi and USB charging to help people stay connected, a valuable feature for everyone and not least young people studying.”
