Stagecoach South West and Devon County Council have jointly won the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) South West Award for innovation. It celebrates the success of the Exeter Park and Ride/Depot Dual-Use Scheme at Matford.

The first of its type in the UK, the scheme has enabled use of the existing park and ride alongside a new, environmentally-efficient depot with overnight storage facilities for over 150 buses, achieving 24 hour usage of the site.

The Matford Park and Ride was identified as a suitable location for a new bus depot, after planning permission was granted for a mixed-use development on the site of the existing bus station

Bob Dennison, Managing Director of Stagecoach South West, sasys: “We are delighted to receive this prestigious industry award, together with Devon County Council, for the Matford shared use site.

“Having never been attempted before, the move to combine both operations in one location was a bold one and we are therefore pleased that the scheme has been recognised and rewarded in this way by the CIHT.”

The Matford Park and Ride was identified as a suitable location for a new bus depot, after planning permission was granted for a mixed-use development on the site of the existing bus station.

Analysis by Devon County Council determined that, with careful management of the site, the two operations could work alongside each other.

On this evidence, and with backing from Exeter City Council, Stagecoach took the decision to launch its first UK dual-use site.

The works commenced in Nov 2015 and were completed in September 2016 at a cost of £8m.

Stagecoach South West provides local bus services across the whole of Devon and Torbay, and into Plymouth, Cornwall and Somerset.

Over its financial year from May 2015 to April 2016 it carried a total of 32.1 million passengers and operated a total of 17.94 million miles. It employs 1,197 staff at 4 depots, 3 sub-depots and 8 outstations.
