Staff at Arriva have been raising money for a popular colleague who has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) and needs £50,000 to adjust his home.

Dwayne Wells, Arriva Yorkshire’s head of commercial, was diagnosed with the debilitating condition at the age of 36 in June 2023, just weeks after getting married to wife Kerry.

His manager Kim Cain, Area Director for Arriva Yorkshire and North East, and her management team have set up a Just Giving page in support of the work needed to amend his home to suit his future needs.

As of the time of writing, they are within £300 of their target of £3,000, after achieving their initial goal of £1,500 within 24 hours.

MND, which mainly affects those in their 60s and 70s, affects the brain and nerves and there is currently no cure for it.

Kim Cain says: “I have been speaking to Dwayne over the course of the last few months and his colleagues and I decided to try and help him and his family out.

“After coming to terms with the diagnosis, Dwayne and his family are doing all they can to allow him to remain active and in work while also ticking off as many things on their bucket list as possible.

“He’s told me the last few days have been emotional as lots of people have reached out to him after we shared his story and asked people to donate. He’s very grateful.

“I’ve always been struck by the level of generosity of our colleagues at Arriva and the wider bus industry.

“It’s vital we come together and support one of our own and I know staff will do what they can to help.

“Our values at Arriva are that we care passionately, we do the right thing and we make a difference. That’s what we do and here we are supporting a much-loved colleague.”
