Back in May 2022, Irizar announced the arrival of the Irizar integral i6S Efficient. This latest generation of vehicle is designed to deliver optimum efficiency to operators, whilst enhancing the passenger experience, with an emphasis on sustainability.

Initial figures reported that consumption and emissions were reduced by up to 13%, with the weight of the vehicle down by 950kg and 30% improved aerodynamic coefficient.

Since the announcement was made, forty-one vehicle orders have been placed. Amport and District Coaches were one the first UK operators to order and subsequently take delivery of the Efficient.

We caught up with Nigel Tedd, Director, to find out how the Efficient is performing.

“We do a lot of trips to the Northern Rhine region of Central Germany either out or backloaded and the other way empty. We had three vehicles go out together in February, two of which were from other manufacturers and one 22-plate Irizar i6 Integral. They all came back averaging 12.5mpg, give or take a few points.

“The new Irizar Integral i6S Efficient has just done the same journey and returned an mpg of 13.76, so an extra 10%. When we average about 120,000kms a year, that will be a fair saving.”

Based on the results seen at Amport and District, this equates to a fuel saving of around £3,000 per year, demonstrating the Efficient’s competitiveness when the total cost of ownership is calculated.

Excellent aerodynamic performance is the key to this new generation of coaches. Part of the front of the vehicle and roof has been modified. The curvature of the windscreen and the other front windows have also been reworked to reduce air resistance as much as possible.

Furthermore, the Irizar i6S Efficient has the option to replace the rearview mirrors with digital vision cameras with the two-fold goal of providing wide-angle vision in any weather condition and situation, even at night or in the rain.

Another key feature of the Efficient is overall weight reduction. Every component within the Integral’s design was analysed to achieve an impressive 900kg weight reduction, whilst also achieving a better weight distribution which optimises both the efficiency and handling of the vehicle

Thanks to those innovations we’ve been able to increase the space for passengers to improve ergonomics and comfort. We’ve also reduced noise and vibrations to the minimum. The cockpit has likewise been redesigned to be more comfortable and ergonomic and have a larger field of vision. The new line of Hispacold climate control devices is more compact, efficient, and lighter.
