Hybrid Irizar i4h with Cummins ISB power shown

Two-axle i4h powered by Cummins ISB engine and Edrive electric motor

An interurban parallel hybrid coach solution was exhibited by Irizar at the FIAA show in the form of an i4h integral in left-hand drive form.

The i4h is powered by a six-cylinder Cummins ISB6.7 engine rated at 300bhp and Irizar’s literature shows that it can open in engine-only or battery-only modes, with both power sources available at the same time at times of peak power demand.

An automated six-speed Eaton Fuller gearbox is fitted and Irizar says that the model is available at lengths between 10.7-13m on two axles.

A tri-axle 15m i4h is a new development, powered by the 370bhp, 8.9-litre ISL engine in conjunction with a ZF EcoLife automatic gearbox.

In this model, a 110kW Irizar electric drive package is fitted; in two-axle i4h coaches a 65kW Edrive motor is used.

Irizar says that the i4h is the only Class II hybrid coach in the world with a raised aisle and a luggage compartment. A fuel saving of up to 21% is offered when compared with identical diesel models.

At low speeds the i4h utilises the batteries only to operate in engine-off mode, and at higher speeds it can run in engine-only configuration.
