FirstGroup has launched a network named ‘First Connections’. The initiative is a consolidation of efforts to support personal development among women and ethnically diverse employees within the company.
The network, which connects participants of FirstGroup’s various personal development programmes, aims to facilitate networking, peer support, and career advancement guidance.
The network’s inauguration took place at a central London event, drawing an attendance of over 150 individuals. The group included programme alumni, senior FirstGroup leaders, and external specialist speakers, highlighting the importance and scope of this initiative.
It is expected to evolve into a forum for sharing experiences and knowledge. Regular webinars, opportunities for job shadowing, and mentoring schemes are among the proposed features to enhance the professional development of its members.
Since their inception in 2018, FirstGroup’s personal development programmes have witnessed the participation and completion of over 500 employees. Around 40% of these participants have successfully advanced to larger roles within the company post-completion.
Graham Sutherland, CEO of FirstGroup, says: “We are committed to increasing the diversity of our workforce, to better understand, as well as reflect, the diverse customers and communities we serve. Our personal development programmes play a vital role in retaining and developing talent from under-represented groups within our business, and this new network will be key in helping people stay connected as well as inspiring others.”
Claire Weston, Head of Drivers at Great Western Railway, adds: “This programme provided useful insights into my strategic strengths and areas for development as identified by my peers, line manager, and direct reports. This has given me a view of how I am perceived and allowed me to focus on areas I can improve on, as well as build upon those strengths I already demonstrate. I have found working with likeminded women has elevated my experience. To know that we have a platform for self-development as well as creating a forum for us all to meet and support each other through our career path is invaluable.”
