While some converters may shy away from unusual requests, GM Coachwork says that it is proud to embrace them.
It was able to give an indication of it capabilities recently when it completed an accessible mobile editing suite for the BBC.
The vehicle accommodates the BBC’s Disability Correspondent Nikki Fox. Based on the latest-generation Mercedes-Benz Vito, it has dual screen, a desk area, 240v sockets, a Webasto heater and LED lighting.
“This isn’t your standard conversion,” says Minibus Sales Manager Paul Barber. “We had to plan the inside with enough room for the BBC to install its equipment and to make enough space to allow Nikki and her colleagues to work in comfort.”
One of the key aspects of the Vito conversion is the Turny Evo seat. It is essential for Nikki to alight from her scooter and transfer to the powered chair that lifts her into and out of the vehicle, where she works behind the installed desk.
The rear half of the Vito is made up of racking to accommodate the computers and audio-visual equipment used for off-site editing. It is also home to portable ramps that allow Vikki’s scooter to be loaded and off-loaded.
