Tintagel Castle in Cornwall is closing from October for improvements to access, via an attractive new footbridge. The current access is by steep steps.
The footbridge has been designed to recreate the historic route into the English Heritage castle, which will re-open in spring 2019.
It will span the gap between the castle’s mainland and island, which was connected by a bridge until at least the 16th century.
English Heritage’s Head of Operations in Cornwall, Georgia Butters, says: “Once complete, it will enhance the Tintagel experience for our visitors, by opening up the island to more of those who find the current access via many steep steps too challenging.”
Malcolm Bell, Chief Executive of Visit Cornwall, says: “Not only will the new footbridge help make the castle more accessible to visitors, but it will also provide an enticing new experience which is sure to bring many visitors to this spectacular stretch of the north Cornwall coast.”
