Arriva Merseyside was recognised with a commendation in the Best Driver Risk Management Performance category at the Safety and Health Excellence Awards in Birmingham on 9 April.
The operator was one of three nominations, on the night losing out on the main award to winner Lanes Group.
The category marks “significant progress in improving road and depot safety through a comprehensive, data-led approach to driver risk management”.
In 2024, Arriva Merseyside achieved a 6.8% reduction in fault and part-fault incidents per 100,000 miles compared to 2023.
Singled out was Green Lane depot, which achieved a 21% year-on-year reduction.
Bootle depot saw a 25% decrease in depot collisions, with enhanced lighting and revised working practices given as factors.
Overall, the operator credits earlier refresher courses for drivers involved in incidents, enhanced starter training with increased driving time and improved fatigue management in schedule planning.
Also cited were “real-time driver feedback, peer mentoring and targeted coaching—supported by improved telematics and leadership investment”.
Accident-related complaints fell by 46% while insurance costs were also reduced, says the operator.
Matt Mort, Arriva Merseyside Risk Manager, says: “This commendation is a reflection of the hard work, care and commitment our teams put into making every journey safer.
“We’re proud to be recognised nationally for our commitment to safety and continuous improvement.
“This commendation belongs to every single one of our drivers, trainers, and support teams who care passionately about getting people where they need to go, safely.”
