Free coach parking for registered groups is among initiatives to build the attractiveness of Barry Island in South Wales to tour operators and organisers. It sits alongside the debut of what is termed a comprehensive new planning guide for those parties.

The Visit the Vale tourism team is working with Steve Reed Tourism to promote Barry Island as a leading seaside destination for coach tours, group holidays and excursion programmes across the UK.

As part of efforts to make planning easier and more cost-effective, the free coach parking will be available at Nell’s Point for registered groups, giving a saving of £50 on the standard daily charge. That total had previously been criticised as excessive, particularly for a part-day stay, with some suggestions that it had deterred coach visits to Barry Island.

Registration for the free parking offer is via the Visit the Vale website, from where the planning resources can be obtained. Information is also available via email.

Speaking about the group travel campaign, Principal Tourism and Marketing Officer Nia Hollins says: “We are delighted to welcome more group visitors to Barry Island and to support the travel trade with practical planning tools and initiatives.

“Whether groups are visiting for a traditional seaside day out, a themed Gavin and Stacey experience or as part of a wider South Wales itinerary, Barry Island offers a memorable and enjoyable experience for all ages.”

Visit the Vale and Steve Reed Tourism note that Barry Island couples “traditional seaside charm with modern visitor facilities, excellent accessibility, and a growing range of attractions and themed experiences.”

Such broad appeal includes Whitmore Bay beach, amusement arcades, adventure golf, family attractions, and a busy annual event programme. Interest in the Gavin and Stacey television series has also driven visitor numbers, the two parties add.

Coach access and parking are convenient to the central attractions at Barry Island, they continue. Accessibility facilities include a Changing Places unit and beach wheelchairs available with advance booking.

Comments Steve Reed Tourism director Steve Reed: “Barry Island is a fantastic destination for groups and one that continues to grow in popularity with coach operators and group organisers alike.

“It offers that classic British seaside atmosphere while also providing the facilities and atmosphere that today’s group travel market expects. The free coach parking initiative is another strong incentive for operators looking for quality, value, and ease of planning.”
