i8 integral debuts with next-generation DAF-based driveline that will give a potential 5% fuel saving
Irizar displayed the first example of its integral range with the next generation of DAF Euro 6 engines at Busworld, and it claims that up to a 5% like-for-like fuel consumption reduction will be possible over coaches with the existing MX-11 and MX-13 units.
To complement DAF’s efficiency gains, Irizar has introduced a number of complementary steps. They include predictive powertrain control and various ‘smart’ auxiliaries. The whole package will be introduced in 2018.
“Engines on their own will deliver a saving of 3%, but we believe that we can increase that to a maximum of 5% as a whole package,” says Integral Coach Manager Azibar Zelaia.
“We will introduce the ZF Traxon automated gearbox at the same time as the new engines and Traxon has a coasting mode, which improves economy. We will also fit alternators and compressors that deliver ‘power on demand’.” The tag axle on tri-axle coaches is also revised.
DAF says that key to the efficiency gains in the new MX-11 and MX-13 units is downspeeding. Maximum torque will come in from as low as 900rpm, which will allow engine speeds to be reduced by up to 200rpm.
The engines weigh 20kg less than the previous models on a like-for-like basis and the exhaust unit is 50kg lighter. New pistons and turbos are used and both engines benefit from reduced internal friction.
Power and torque figures are increased. The MX-11’s maximum output is 450bhp and 2,300Nm respectively, while the MX-13 extends its lead as the industry’s power king, delivering a maximum of 530bhp and 2,600Nm of torque. Intermediate ratings rise similarly.
Irizar also saw its i8 integral crowned Coach of the Year 2018. It has now delivered over 1,000 integral coaches.
