The VDL Bus and Coach and VDL Van Hool operations will be integrated under a single VDL Bus Group banner to accompany the long-awaited debut of the Futura 3 coach in October.
That model will make its first showing at Busworld Brussels. Its arrival comes after extensive development, with a prototype example – under a project then dubbed Vision Futura – first appearing in September 2023.
VDL says that the Futura 3 “marks an important step forward in the vision of long-distance transport for passenger, driver and operator alike,” and that a cut in fuel consumption of up to 15% from the current model is a major contributor to cost reduction over the vehicle’s life.
The Futura 3 will have “a completely new interior concept” that majors on passenger comfort and ergonomics; an optimised driver environment with improved sightlines, intuitive controls and digital support; and an updated design to enhance aerodynamics and brand identity.
Safety and assistance systems are in line with the latest EU General Safety Regulation, while in a notable comment, VDL adds that the Futura 3 driveline architecture is modular and “prepared for future powertrains.”
It is understood that the Futura 3 will be built in right-hand drive, but routeone is awaiting confirmation of UK plans for the model from VDL.
Consolidation of the VDL Bus and Coach and VDL Van Hool businesses will see that new organisation operate under both the Van Hool and VDL brands, which are to be maintained.
Production of Van Hool coaches will be maintained in North Macedonia, where VDL says it can take advantage of efficiency, craftsmanship and economies of scale. VDL-branded coaches will be built in their longstanding home of Valkenswaard in the Netherlands. The VDL Citea bus will stay at Roselare in Belgium.
Integration of VDL Bus and Coach and VDL Van Hool into VDL Bus Group comes over a year after VDL Groep completed the purchase of parts of the former Van Hool coach and bus business.
VDL says it is committed “to cooperation and long-term synergy, with continuity as the main driver.” It adds: “Combining the two companies’ strengths will create a solid foundation for further growth, innovation and customer focus in the European and Northern American bus markets.”
