More talking buses rolled out in Oxford

Bus passengers in Oxford will benefit from even more buses with on-board audio-visual ‘next stop’ information.

The charity Guide Dogs has welcomed the additional buses to The Oxford Bus Company fleet.

It has campaigned for many years to have audio-visual information compulsory on all buses across the UK. In late 2016 the government made an amendment to the Bus Services Bill to require all buses to provide accessible next-stop and final-destination information for people with vision impairments.

Guide Dog’s Community Engagement Officer for the region – Clive Wood said “Having more buses around the city that have on-board audio information is fantastic news for blind and partially sighted people.  This technology makes independent travel for people with sight loss so much easier and less stressful”.

Phil Southall, Managing Director of The Oxford Bus Company, said: "We are fully committed to making our services as accessible as possible for all of our passengers and support the Guide Dogs for the Blind's campaign.

"Half of our bus fleet, some 55 buses, are now fully equipped with audio-visual technology that ensures our visually impaired passengers receive additional support during their journeys.

“The feedback we have received from passengers has been fantastic and we look forward to building on this excellent progress as we continue to update our fleet.”
