The UK Coach Operators Association (UKCOA) has appointed Stephen Spendley (pictured) to the position of Director of Operations. He is joined by fellow arrival Margaret O’Kane, who takes up the post of Membership and Administration Manager.
Mr Spendley brings extensive experience in the enhancement of transport operations and ensuring regulatory compliance across UK and European sectors.
His operational knowledge is complemented by an understanding of transport legislation and government procedures honed via time with DVSA. Experience there has provided Mr Spendley with “detailed knowledge of the legislative framework governing public transport in the UK, as well as the regulatory challenges faced by coach operators,” says UKCOA.
During his time with DVSA, Mr Spendley played a key role in shaping enforcement strategies and ensuring compliance with complex regulations. Such a background will make him “a valuable advocate” for UKCOA members.
He also has expertise in managing cross-channel ferry operations, particularly between Dover and Calais. UKCOA says that will stand Mr Spendley in good stead as someone “who understands the logistical challenges and opportunities in this vital corridor” as coaching faces up to the consequences of the EU Schengen-area Entry/Exit System at Dover.
UKCOA President Stephen Telling has welcomed Mr Spendley to the trade association. “We are confident that Stephen’s expertise will be instrumental in advancing the organisation’s strategic goals, supporting its members, and advocating for the continued success and growth of the coach industry,” says Mr Telling.
Adds Mr Spendley: “I am excited to join the UK Coach Operators Association and contribute my knowledge to support our members in navigating the challenges and opportunities ahead.
“I look forward to working closely with industry partners to enhance operational efficiencies and ensure that our members are well prepared to meet the demands of a rapidly changing regulatory landscape.”
Meanwhile, Ms O’Kane joins UKCOA as Membership and Administration Manager to succeed Laura Li, who has departed the trade body. She brings wider experience of administration, including via a spell with Transport for London.
Speaking about the dual appointments, UKCOA Managing Director Peter Bradley says: “I am delighted to welcome Stephen and Margaret to UKCOA and significantly increase the resources that we have within the Association.
“We have an ambitious programme of works to undertake, which are the priorities of our membership. With now over 100 coach operator members and 25 industry partner colleagues, this is a great time for companies, especially if not a member of any trade body, to join.”
