Stagecoach South has named Tony Probert as Engineering Director. He took up the role on 1 July having been in post on an interim basis since December 2021, and is responsible for 500 buses across nine operating centres in Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex.
Mr Probert’s elevation to the operator’s senior management team comes after 24 years with Stagecoach. His career began in 1998 as a shift fitter at Winchester depot and it progressed with the aid of the group’s staff development programme to capture Assistant Engineering Manager and Engineering Manager positions.
Most recently, Mr Probert has been instrumental in the project management of the introduction of new technologies, including the upgrade of 37 existing buses in Portsmouth to achieve Euro VI standards to comply with the city’s Clean Air Zone. He has also been project lead for Stagecoach South on the introduction of the GreenRoad low bridge alert system as part of a group-wide initiative.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr Probert says: “Our transport services play a critical role in connecting our communities. I look forward to working with the team and building upon the success of my predecessors in driving the business forward and delivering Stagecoach’s net zero ambitions and creating healthier, more connected communities.”
Adds Stagecoach South Managing Director Edward Hodgson: “Tony Probert brings tremendous experience to the role and a fantastic track record. That will stand him in great stead for leading his team as we strive for engineering excellence to support future growth.
“His technical knowledge, experience and professionalism will be a huge asset to the company as we seek to meet all the challenges we currently face as we continue to exit the pandemic and rebuild our customer base.”
