Westminster isn’t the only location where coach bays are being removed.
I live in the centre of Glastonbury, opposite the Town Hall and St Dunstan’s car park, which is the drop-off point for Glastonbury Abbey. Currently, we have three bays allocated for coach parking.
I have been told that from 1 April, those bays are to be replaced with 15 car parking spaces.
Parking enforcement, meanwhile, is transferring to Mendip District Council.
At the moment, the Town Hall does not have a licence to fine for parking infringements.
Coaches will now be expected to use the eight spaces at the Proper Job coach park on Feversham Lane, where at least parking is free for the foreseeable future.
The Town Council bought the toilet block located there two years ago for £1 from Mendip Council.
But these facilities were closed 10 years ago and are still in good condition, although unfortunately the water supply was disconnected.
Through road development, the water feed was dug up and an admittedly unsubstantiated source claimed it would cost over £10,000 to reconnect it.
