Remote downloading of digital tachograph data should not be seen as a risk and instead represents a multitude of benefits for coach operators, transport training and compliance specialist Novadata has said.
Chairman Derek Broomfield (pictured) notes that momentum is moving away from manual downloads towards remote capture of data by operators. That delivers positives such as easier compliance, reduced administration, stronger security, better driver oversight and lower costs, he adds.
Novadata offers its own remote downloading and tracking solution that provides a real-time feed, enabling transport management staff to see the current position with their drivers at any time.
“Think of the reduction in office time spent chasing up vehicles and people if their data has not been downloaded within their time limits,” Mr Broomfield explains. “Remote downloading technology eliminates that last-minute stress, ensuring everything has been done in time.
“Instead, the driver can download everything daily if they so wish, but certainly comfortably within the legal deadlines, and without all the extra liaison and chasing up that goes on otherwise.”
He notes how members of DVSA Earned Recognition are subject to stricter limits on data download from driver cards and vehicle units. Novadata adds that more secure, time-sensitive record keeping allows operators to rapidly identify problems, making infringements less likely.
The supplier’s Online Tachograph Analysis solution allows them to integrate other aspects of compliance such as daily walkaround checks, fleet maintenance management, driving licence audit, and wider driver management.
Such a position “centralises and secures a significant amount of data needed for compliance and helps operators to demonstrate more clearly that they are fulfilling their O-Licence undertakings,” Novadata adds.
It says that with the current financial year approaching an end, operators should ensure that FY2026/27 budgets include remote downloading “as a priority.”
Adds Mr Broomfield: “With enforcement agencies, particularly DVSA, demanding accurate, up-to-date records, investing in remote tachograph downloading now is not just about convenience – it is about safeguarding your business.”
