A great letter, in issue 761 relating to driver recruitment and a lack of flexibility [routeone/Letters/10 October].
Too many operators structure their working practices with only themselves in mind – a bit like operationally-led timetables which ignore the customer.
Looking around the country, there are vacancies in most places. First Leicester is currently offering a £1,000 bonus to new starters with category D licences. No mention of flexibility here though.
Leicester's incentive seems a bit meagre when one sees that First Aberdeen are offering 130% more with their £2,300 carrot. Interesting to compare that and wage rates too – Aberdeen's house prices have fallen over the last 12 years and the average price is similar to Leicester's.
First Glasgow mention 'flexibility', so that's encouraging, [and it’s] great to see flexibility offered for Aldershot depot at Stagecoach South.
